Materials and Workshop Equipment

Here's a brief overview of the equipment, tools and materials I commonly use on most of my projects. I only use top-quality and rated products.

This page is for folks interested in further information on the materials, tools and equipment I use to build our furniture and boards...

Steel - Mild and stainless is sourced from UK suppliers

Hardwoods - Sustainably sourced from UK suppliers. All timber is FSC Certified

Cleaners and finishing products:

Steel cleaning - Acetone is used prior to application of the sealant to decrease the steel

Steel Finish - Owatrol is used a clear/matte sealant applied to the steel after cleaning with acetone. This protects the patina and prevents rusting. It is generally applied with a lint-free cloth and the given 2--3 days to fully cure.

Hardwood Finish - After a lot of trial and error, my finish of choice is Osmo PolyX Oil. I generally use a clear, matt product that allows the wood grain to show through naturally. This finish dries and is a hard wax. It is resistant to most household stains, such as water, beer, wine.

I have had an English Elm board treated with one coat of Osmo in my house for about a year and have subjected it to all sorts of abuse to test the product.
